Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body to normalise the tonal quality and relax the tissues . It stimulates blood circulation , assist the lymphatic system and improves the elimination of waste from the body . though massage largely affects the muscles just under the skin , its benefit reach the deeper layers of muscles and organs on their own . Massage , if done properly , results in artificial stimulation and increases the blood supply to the body .
There are total of six general technical manipulations involved in the practice of massage and these are stroking, kneading , percussion, friction, pressure and vibration on the joints and muscles for therapeutic physical responses. Each one has a specific and definite purpose.
There are different types of massages depending upon the purpose of the massage and is known as preventive health massage , relaxation massage, massage for beautification , massage for pain relief and massage for sports, etc.
Massage is done with different types of oils like olive oil, mustard oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil or sesame oil, depending upon the constitution of the person and whether he/she belongs to the vata or pitta or kapha category.
Ayurvedic massage works on the muscular system the skeletal system, the circulatory system, the nervous system, the excretory system and the skin . then there is the lymphatic massage which provides relief from chronic diseases. Ayurvedic massage includes knowledge of the essential pressure points which are rubbed and pressed during the massage.
The lymphatic system is an essential part of the immune system , which helps the body fight infection and cancers.
